Loneliness - theme within Steinbecks Of Mice and Men Essay Example for Free

Loneliness theme within Steinbecks Of Mice and Men Essay Loneliness is the theme Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. He describes loneliness, and secluded lives of men who work on the ranch. George and Lennie who together share a dream, their partnership of farming their own land. Mutually they partake in a relationship so rare, travelling so many miles together building independence upon one another. Lennies loving puppy-like character has its advantages and disadvantages. His natural simplicity is also considered as naivety, which in many cases leads to disaster. For instance he reverts to fighting when he cant get his way Crashing back through the bush. This proves his childish qualities and immaturity. As with George who adopts a father figure role is by far more realistic, sensible and reliable. Hes independent suggesting that I could get along so easy and so nice if I didnt have you no my taillive easy and get a girl. Alone the two would not survive the cruel ways of the world but together as where one lacks the other gains building a strong companionship. We discover further information about the lonely lives of specific characters living on the ranch from chapter two onwards. Steinbeck at the beginning of chapter two sets the scene. He illustrates the deserted spread of land of which, Lennie and George come across the ranch. They encounter an unfamiliar face by the name of Swamper, a crippled old man who introduced them to the bunkhouse and discussed Whitey a former worker. Whitey was a blacksmith, was strangely hygienic and kept himself to himself. He had the tendency to dress-up even when he wasnt going anywhere put on a necktie even as the swamper described. He had recently quit as he had an issue with all food. This I feel shows a life of very small meaning. I cant imagine anyone who is completely fulfilled to pick at food for the reason of just because? Gimme my time. This I think is Steinbeck showing some evidence of loneliness. A man could be so desolate that he would look to find any excuse to make a fuss, to be noticed. He seemed to create the excitement in which he lacked so desperately, dressing up on any occasion possible a reason to wake up each morning! A character in the story that experiences loneliness is the swamper also known as Candy. A friendly and elderly man, who has worked at the ranch for many years. He stays at the bunkhouse with a dog as a companion. Candy and his dog are inseparable. Candy depends on the loyal hound, and they have shared many happy times together. Later on in the story, Candys dog is forced to be put down for the reason that the rest of the workers disagree for the nasty and decayed mutt to be kept alive. The workers constantly complained of the redolence of the dog However, Candy and his dog were literally attached by the hip and the stench had become unnoticeable and became part of Candy he had been around him so much I never notice how he stinks. This I think explains part of Candys loneliness that without his dog there is a great emptiness within him. George and Lennie soon befriended Candy after the death of the dog, proposing a chance to go into business together. This seems like the opportunity of a lifetime to Candy, his hope for companionship and a secure job to rely on. His destiny to find fulfilment in many respects has come true and will do any thing in his own power to make sure its not taken away from him. Another character that is lonely is Curlys Wife an attractive woman with full rouged lips and wide spaced eyes, heavily made-up. Fingernails painted red, hair hung in little rolled clusters. She was known to be flirtatious with a bitchy personality, a terrible reputation. Curlys Wife had seen life as a disappointment failing in her lifes goals coulda been in the movies said so frequently and her bitterness towards anyone who was happier or more successful than herself. She is found picking on those less fortunate than her as when she made the remark They left all the weak ones here, clearly it obvious that the comment was meant to be offensive. A reason for all this cruel behaviour may be loneliness Curlys Wife has no friends and a husband that ignores her. He never seems to be around Any you boys seen Curly? Hes usually in a hoar house or out with the guys. Although, extremely over protective of her. The ranch workers had little respect for Curlys Wife by speaking of her as something of Curlys, no importance she often feels that she is never wanted. Curlys Wife discovers Lennies desire of her in which she takes of advantage of. For once there is someone with an interest of her I get lonely I never get to talk to nobody. When Curlys wife hides behind the make or makes rude remarks it could be because shes insecure within herself, lacking confidence so when she puts people down it makes her feel better. The character that experiences the most loneliness is Crooks also known as the Nigger. He is crippled from a damaged spine resulting in an odd shape figure (hunch back). He is described to have eyes deep in his head his lean face was lined with deep black wrinkles, and thin pain-tightened lips which were lighter than his face. Crooks lives alone as around the time the story was set to be in there were race issues causing discrimination, which was unfortunate for Crooks. Over the years of working in such a secluded environment Crooks seemed to have become bitter and nasty warning people away Dont come where youre not wanted. Crooks seemed to talk to no one other than Slim a real skinner he looks out for his team. Crooks respected Slim, as he was the only one who would treat him as if he were a human being. You learn about Crooks when Lennie approaches him in his bunk. At first he is completely against the idea and tries to worry Lennie with the thought that George maybe hurt or unable to come back Spose he gets killed, or hurt so much, he cant come home. This was poof of Crooks evil way of thinking leaving Lennies mind running crazy but he shortly reassures him saying he will come back, no need to worry. We discover later that Crooks lived a happy childhood playing with the white kids from next door. He also had close relationships with his brothers. It was later on in life that the harsh world ended up him living such a lonely life. He is self-conscious, believing no one to ever like him so when he meets Lennie and discovers he actually takes interest in him, he is shocked and even suggest to help in the assistance of the business between George, Candy and Lennie when he over here the discussion between the three.

The Importance Of Travel Insurance Commerce Essay

The Importance Of Travel Insurance Commerce Essay Travel insurance includes insurance thats supposed to cover financial and medical expenses and other losses as youre traveling, either internationally or inside your own country. Travel insurance that is temporary could be arranged at the booking time of the trip to cover the duration of the trip, or a more extensive insurance could be bought from travel agents, travel insurance companies or from travel suppliers like tour operators or cruiselines. Travel insurance oftentimes provides coverage for different travelers. Travel insurance bought from travel suppliers is less inclusive than insurance provided by the insurance companies. International travel, cruise travel, adventure travel, leisure travel, business travel and student travel are all different choices which could be insured.   The more popular complications which are covered by this type of insurance include:   Return of a minor kid   Trip interruption/cancellation   Overseas funeral expenditures   Departure thats delayed   Baggage thats delayed   Rental car damage excess and personal liability   Medical expenses   Emergency repatriation/evacuation   Repatriation of remains   Disablement benefit, injury or accidental death   Curtailment   Damage to, theft of, or loss of money and personal possessions   Legal help   The insurers will cover pregnancy related expenditures, if the travel happens inside the 1st trimester. Following that, the insurance coverage differs from each insurer.   This type of insurance could additionally offer assistance services, oftentimes around the clock, seven days per week which could involve emergency travel assistance and concierge services.   Traveling insurance for the period of a journey is priced at around five to seven percent of the price of a trip.   Employment Insurance   Employment insurance includes a kind of insurance that offers financial support for the policyholder in the instance that he or she loses her or his job. Employment insurance is translated into unemployment benefits. Employment insurance might be offered by the government as a type of government financial aid or social security insurance. In this instance, employment insurance might refer to the funds offered by the government to cover any living expenses of an individual who unpredictably loses her or his job. Employment insurance of this kind is obtainable just for a short duration of transition til the individual locates another job. Additonally, there includes these kind of insurance policies obtainable for buy within insurance companies that are private.   Insurance for employment is sold as a portion of a loan or credit card package from lending institutions or banks. This type of insurance becomes a type of liability insurance where the individual doesnt benefit directly. Unemployment benefits of this kind dont offer funds which cover the price of living. Instead, the sole reason of this kind of unemployment benefit is for the individual to offer guarantee to the lending institution or bank that a loan will be paid, even if the individual unexpectedly loses her or his income.   This type of insurance covers liabilities and costs incurred by the insured individual as she or he unexpectedly loses his or her job. The kinds of financial aid offered by this kind of insurance include payment for financial obligations, like loans, as well as cost of living allowance.   Liability Inusrance   There includes several different kinds of insurance policies obtainable, yet liability insurance is one of the more common due to it costing less than the other choices. Regarding car insurance policies, liability insurance is priced less than full coverage. The purpose for this is due to full coverage insurance paying for both your car as well as any other car included in the accident, and medical expenses and property damage due to injuries to another party or you.   On the flip side, liability insurance is solely responsible for the other persons losses. Your and your property will be left unprotected, yet liability insurance will protect you from being held responsible for the other persons damages.   There includes various kinds of liability insurance, involving general liability, that operates in a similar way as car insurance, yet covers businesses.   The term D O liability means directors and officers liability and is supposed to cover the omissions or acts of the ones in the position of officer or director. A whole company ought not be held liable for the failure to act, actions, statements or other errors which are the responsibility of a director or officer.   Employer liability is additonally referred to as workers comp, and its a mandatory type of liability coverage which every business needs to possess.   Professional liability is almost the same as malpractice insurance, though coverage might not be as comprehensive as a few malpractice policies within various fields. The reason for professional liability would be to protect the ones seen as experts or professionals within a field, who might not be protected by general liability because of their expertise.   Credit Insurance   Credit insurance is a phrase utilized to define both consumer credit insurance as well as business credit insurance, that is, credit unemployment insurance, credit disability insurance and credit life insurance.   The easiest method of differentiating between these 2 kinds of insurance is:   Consumer credit insurance includes credit insurance which customers buy to insure payment of credit that is extended to the customer.   Business credit insurance includes credit insurance which businesses buy to insure payment of credit that is extended by a business.   Consumer credit insurance includes a method of customers to insure repayment of the loans even if the borrower loses a job, becomes disabled or passes away. Consumer credit insurance could be bought to insure all types of consumer loans involving home mortgage borrowing, loans from finance companies, credit card debt and auto loans. Though bought by the borrower/consumer, the benefit payment will go to the company financing the buy or extending credit toward the customer.   The trade or credit insurance is a risk management product and insurance policy which covers a payment risk that results from the delivery of services or goods. Trade insurance typically pays an agreed percentage of a receivable or invoice which stays unpaid as the result of a protracted default, bankruptcy or insolvency and covers a portfolio of buyers. Trade insurance is bought by business entities in order to insure that their accounts receivable from loss was caused by the insolvency of debtors. This type of product isnt obtainable to individual people.   Health Insurance   Health insurance is a kind of collectivism where the individuals pool collectively their risk, and in this instance, the risk of incurring medical expenditures. The collective will be organized on a non-profit basis for the pool members and is publicly owned, although pools of health insurance, within a few countries, might additionally be managed by the for-profit companies. At times, its utilized broadly to incorporate insurance covering long-term nursing, disability or custodial care necessities. It might be offered via the government-sponsored social insurance plan, or from insurance companies that are private. It might be bought upon a group basis or bought by a single person. In either instance, the individuals or covered groups pay a premium, fee or taxto assist in protecting themselves from unpredictable healthcare expenditures.   The U.S. system of health care heavily relies upon private health insurance, the main coverage source for many Americans. Fifty-eight percent of Americans possess private health insurance, according to the CDC. Public plans offer the main coverage source for seniors as well as children and families with low-incomes who meet specific qualification requirements. The main public plans include Medicare, a federal social insurance plan for senior citizens and specific disabled people, Medicaid, thats funded jointly by the states and federal government, yet administered at the state level, that covers specific low income families and their children, as well as SCHIP, additionally a federal-state partnership which serves specific families and children who arent eligible for Medicaid, yet who cant afford coverage that is private.   Property Insurance   Property insurance offers protection against a majority of risks to property, like theft, fire and weather damage. This involves specialized types of insurance like boiler insurance, home insurance, earthquake insurance, flood insurance or fire insurance. The property will be insured within 2 primary ways named perils and open perils. Named perils require the specific loss cause to be listed within an insurance policy to be offered. Open perils will cover every bit of the loss causes not solely excluded within a policy. Some common exclusions on open peril policies involve damage that results from war, acts of terrorism, nuclear incidents, floods and earthquakes.  Ã‚   There includes 3 kinds of property insurance coverage. Specific cash value coverage offers replacement price minus the depreciation. Extended replacement price will pay above the coverage limit if the prices for construction increase. As you receive property insurance, the limit for coverage is the maximum quantity the company of property insurance will pay out in the instance of property loss. The quantity will have to fluctuate if houses within the neighborhood rise. Household content replacement will be tabulated as a percentage of the value of your house in the instance of a fire. A policy could pay for alternative arrangements of living if a fire makes your house uninhabitable. One final coverage choice will be to possess alternative living arrangements incorporated into the policy. Replacement cost coverage will pays the price of replacing your property regardless of its appreciation or depreciation. The premiums for replacement cost coverage are based upon replacement price va lues.   Life Insurance   In order to clear up any confusion, life insurance is made to protect the ones you love from financial disaster in the case of your death. Understanding this, it is vital that you establish if you require life insurance and how much you need to buy.   You usually require life insurance if:   You possess children who are dependent   The retirement funds you have arent enough to offer for your spouse a secure future   You possess a huge estate   You possess a spouse   Elderly parents or relatives depend upon your income  Ã‚   You own your own business   If you do not possess dependents, you might still want to buy an insurance policy in order to prevent becoming a financial burden to the ones you love. Young singles will additionally benefit from buying insurance while they are healthy and young, permitting them to secure a lower premium for furture years.   The beneficiaries of the life insurance policy could utilize the proceeds from the life insurance to:   Pay any estate taxes   Pay for daily expenses such as clothing, childcare and food   Donate to a charity   Pay for funeral costs and last expenses   Pay off any existing debts such as credit card debt, car loan or mortgage   Put toward your spouses fund for retirement   Deciding how much insurance the ones you love will require to maintain their living quality could be difficult. Experts advise buying between five and ten times your yearly salary.   Home Insurance   The main activity while identifying home insurance is to examine what falls outside of basic coverage, you ought to then create a plan for retaining, transferring, reducing or avoiding the exposures as they might be required. Its usually ideal to fill gaps prior to serious uninsured losses occuring. Home insurance doesnt imply cheaper coverage, and determinations ought not be based only upon cost.   Your home insurance policy ought to possess coverage of these parts:   Theft, destruction, or damage to your property  Ã‚   Prices of living expenses within cases of loss   No-fault medical payments to those injured upon your property   Destruction or damage of the detached structures  Ã‚   Personal liability for all property damage and injuries   A vital factor to keep in mind is that your house must be insured for one-hundred percent of the estimated new replacement price. If you insure for depreciated or original value, depreciation will be deducted from the costs of repair and the claim payments will be significantly decreased.   The added premium ought to make it simpler than facing hundreds in losses if the value of the house has appreciated. Ten percent is involved for detached structures, for instance, if the home is insured for $350,000, coverage for $35,000 is involved for detached structures. Its recommended to include the extra coverage for replacement value for the structures that are detached.   For your home insurance to be effective, it might require some proper planning to receive the ideal value in obtaining cheaper home insurance.   Auto Insurance   Many states require their drivers to have auto insurance prior to issuing an auto registration, so its a policy that you cant avoid if you possess a vehicle. The lingo of auto insurance could be especially complicated to comprehend, yet its worth studying if you do not wish to pay premiums that are excessive.   The initial theory of auto insurance is that the policy will cover a certain vehicle. This will mean that youre not covered while driving other vehicles, like your brothers jalopy, unless the policy especially involves them. Because of potential damage to the vehicle itself or injuries that are caused by the automobile, the policy additionally insures the individuals who ride or drive within the car. Primarily, the auto insurance policy will cover your family and you. But, if you allow somebody else to operate your vehicle, like a relative or friend, she or he additionally will be covered on the policy.   Your auto insurance is many types of coverage mixed into a single policy. The main components of coverage include underinsured and uninsured motorist, personal injury, medical payments, comprehensive, collision, property damage and bodily injury.   A few facilities will ask questions which differentiate your automobile usage from the population that is general. But, as it comes to several factors which may decrease the premium, like whether you work full-time or part-time, or the amount of trips you usually make in a week, the risk from heavy drivers will be shared across the whole portfolio of users.   We are a small, independent company, which runs through talent and creativity. European union came into existence

European union came into existence European Union European Union came into existence with an endeavor to stop the war between the bordering countries and to maintain the peace and harmony throughout the Europe. European Union is constructed on the principles of stability and to promote the prosperity among European nations with presence of security. Recent recession has affected each and every part of the world, though it has a differential effect on each country. Some country has been most affected by it on the other hand some countries are least affected. Europe has been badly affected by the recession this has induced European union to draw a recovery strategy for the next ten years to see a prosperous and a competitive Europe in terms of knowledge and market growth. Effect of financial crisis on European nation Unemployment: financial crisis has lead to an increase in the unemployment and still number of jobs are been laid off from different sectors irrespective of the output, just to minimize and to compensate the previous losses (Andrew Watt, 2009). A report by the European Union tells that in Europe around twenty three million people are unemployed (European Union, 2010). The countries which are most severely affected by the recession and which led to unemployment are Latvia where unemployment rate arose linearly from 11% to 28.2% and the country which was least affected by the recession was Poland, its unemployment rate just arose marginally from 17.8% to 18.2% and its GDP remain constant in comparison to the eastern Europe and a central Europe (European union, 2009). From the unemployment point of view, it is been seen that the financial sector is most affected as compare to the other sectors throughout the Europe. In a report by â€Å"International Labour Organization† the bank s in Ireland are shedding maximum number of jobs. Similarly Dexia bank which is a joint venture between France and Belgium is also shedding large number of jobs. In the UK condition is worse as banks like Barclays and HSBC are laying off thousands of its employs (International Labour Organization, 2009). Export and import weaken: the recession also affected the export and import business of the EU27. The export business which contributes a lot to the economy faced a sharp decline and it could not help in balancing or reversing the effect of recession. It was recorded that during the period of 2008-2009 at the peak of recession, the export business of the United Kingdom fell to 6.9% which is the sharpest decline and which is never recorded in the UK history of export business and its import fell by 1.6% (Kathryn Hopkins, 2010). In euro zone there are countries like Germany, Netherlands and Sweden whose economies to a larger extent are reliant on the export business and at the time of recession they contributed very less to the GDP. They were only able to contribute half of the original contribution to its GDP and a country like France was able to contribute just  ¼ to the GDP. This affected the economy of the European nations badly, though not taking full advantage of the weaken eur o for doing the export business. All together EU27 GDP was reported to be -4% (Media Eghbal, 2009). Mergers and acquisitions: recession has not been beneficial in terms of mergers and acquisitions to Europe. Recession made MA at its lowest from the previous years but still there were some MA taking place within Europe, for example Lactalis a France based company buyed Ladorma a Romania based company and Rochea a Switzerland based company bought its share from Genentech Ltd (Claudiu Vranceanu, 2008). But it has been beneficial to developing countries like India and China, as number of mergers and acquisitions were taking place by them in Europe in 2008-2009. It was noticed that British company jaguar and land rover were acquired by the Indian automaker Tata, to make the British company free from the problem of cash flow (BBC, 2008). Similarly acquisition of Schoeweiss of Germany by the Indian auto maker Mahindra and Mahindra (Nimish Sharma, 2010). Decline in the Inflation rate with a threat of deflation: recession had a positive impact on a euro zone in a way that the inflation which was increasing from day to day basis prior recession, started to decline. In Europe it was recorded that the inflation reduced from 4% in the beginning of 2008 to 2.1% at the end of the year (Media Eghbal, 2009), as there was a shortage of cash flow in the market. In addition to this price of oil were also low, which resulted in the lower inflation rate throughout the Euro zone (Adrian Nash, 2008). It was predicted by the researchers that the consumers will be waiting for the cheaper commodity which will make them defer there purchase for the moment and that would affect the producers and the investors. This would deepen the nature of recession. Decline in the industrial production and reduction in revenue: it was experience for the first time that the Europe27 had a negative industrial growth, country like Germany known for its technicality and capability faced a technical recession for the first time in history, with a negative growth. Same was a fate of all European countries; they also faced a negative growth for example France with -.5%, Italy with -.7% and Spain with -.6% (Euro monitor, 2009). Weak currency and decline in interest rate in Europe: in the recession it was recorded that the euro was as its lowest as compared to the US dollar and UK pound and it was still not taking the advantage of doing the international business in terms of export. To minimize the effect of recession and to bring in the stability the Europe central bank steadily started to cut down its interest rate throughout Europe to promote the investors to take risk and bring in some cash flow in market. Effect on the tourism industry: the European tourism industry was severely affected by the financial crisis. By a report from the commission of European tourism, which states that the Europe experienced a sharpest decline in comparison to other part of the world in terms of the tourism revenue. Similarly a report from the World Tourism Organization also confirmed that the Europe tasted a negative growth of -1.1% in the international tourism in the year 2008 and 2009 (Ivan Camilleri, 2010). Evaluating the strategy for recovery proposed by president Jose Manuel Barrosso The new strategy has been proposed, which is named as â€Å"Europe 2020† has been brought into the act as the Lisbon treaty which was been implemented from the past one decade has come to meet its deadline on 2010. The new strategy for 2020 Europe in some ways is similar to the Lisbon Treaty. As in both the treaties issues of growth and competition with the major countries were discussed. Similarly both the treaties formed the new policy structure and the guidelines for the implementation. But the new strategy for Europe 2020 has introduced some new initiatives, which in the past treaties have been introduced but never have been implemented. The Europe 2020 strategy focuses more on the global warning and on the techniques, which need to be researched and developed for the better future. References Andrew Watt. Analysis- Software Solutions :: Computer Science

Analysis- Software Solutions In order to make my database I am going to use Microsoft Access. Other possible systems I could have used are programmes such as Microsoft Excel and also a simple manual system where all the data is hand-written. I chose Microsoft Access, as this is more efficient and more professional as a whole. If I used a manual system I could have improved my problems by having all of the documents filed in alphabetical order, having more filing cabinets or by writing out documents more neatly and more tidily. Filing all documents in alphabetical order would have tidied up the documents and made them easier to find, but as documents would still be in a filing cabinet even though in alphabetical order it would still be time consuming to find them rather than a computerized system which would be a lot faster to find and therefore less time consuming. Also if you use more filing cabinets in which to store documents this may still not be very practical if the person the changes are designed for works in a small office with limited space. As well as this, by taking more care in writing and filling in documents and writing more neatly this would improve the system but it would also be inappropriate at times. This is because you are unable to take care and write neatly all of the time, as there are many occasions in which you are rushed which causes the neatness of your writing to falter. The final reason why I have opted to use Microsoft Access rather than a manual system where filing cabinets are involved is because in Access you can store about 20,000 files but if you had to store 20,000 files using a manual system huge amounts of space would be taken up and it would be very awkward to find the specific document you desire. If I used Microsoft Excel in which to store data this would improve on the current system as it is computerized but it is still not as efficient as other computerized programmes. Microsoft Excel would allow me to create tables, perform calculations, print out single documents and also print out multiple documents. Being able to print out improves on a manual system as it is a lot quicker and you do not have to keep typing documents out time and time again. Although using Microsoft Excel is a large improvement on using a manual system Microsoft Access is the one I have opted to use. This is because on Microsoft Access you are able to perform all actions

Natural Descriptions in Coleridges and Lord Byrons Texts Essay

Natural Descriptions in Coleridge's and Lord Byron's Texts Works Cited Missing Two closely related texts, one that we've studied in this class and one that we haven't, that handle natural description differently are Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and Lord Byron's "Manfred." Both of these texts' central characters have experienced trauma, and their portrayal of their environments reveal the effects that the events have left on them. While Coleridge's mariner is unable to consolidate his past and is relegated to constantly relive it, Byron's Manfred has protected himself from his unnamed vice by distancing himself from his feelings and environment. Obvious parallels exist between the poems, but what I found most striking was the way the narrator illustrates the events and how they result from their mode of handling the traumatic events. The Mariner comes to terms with killing the albatross, and consequently killing his crewmates, by repeatedly voicing his guilt. His description of the souls passing him "like the whiz of [his] crossbow," (l 224) assumption that telling his tale to the hermit will "wash away/ The albatross' blood," (ll 512-13) and expression that "The pang, the curse, with which they died/ Had never passed away" (ll 438-39) shows how the mariner can never accept his actions and alleviate his guilt. I think that it's natural for people to want to come to terms with their past actions in order to better accept one's present state of self, which is why the mariner continually attempts to reconcile his past. The mariner is unable to accomplish this by telling others his story. His descriptions of the story's retelling are affected by his lack of reconciliation. He projects himself into the land... ...o the heavens, and the earth to Mont Blanc which is described as the "monarch of mountains" (1.1 60). The spirits are influential in the stories prominently for the two characters, which reflect the preoccupations and processes of dealing with their traumas. Lastly, the realization that the environment is subjective, due to the power that the mind holds. As Manfred acknowledges, "The mind which is immortal makes itself / Requital for its good or evil thoughts" (3.4 129-130). This originally appears in Milton's Paradise Lost, implying that it's the mind that creates the heaven or the hell. And although Manfred's view on the mind is dark, and very sceptical, he does realize the creative power available to the subject. This same power is expressed in in their descriptions of nature and is influenced by the methods that they go through in dealing with their trauma.
